Unbroken Surface (“canon perpetuus ad unum et hypodiapason”) is a free canon in the style of an open-weave fabric. Written for the Chameleon Chamber Players, students at the Concord Academy in Massachusetts.
I was invited to be composer-in-residence at Concord Academy for the 2020-2021 academic year, with the opportunity to compose for the school's new music chamber ensemble. Because of the pandemic, the piece had to be moved online, which necessitated a score that could be interpreted asynchronously. The score, being rhythmically asynchronous by design, allows each member of the trio to interpret similar materials independently. Meeting with the trio, it was clear that they were up for the interpretive challenges posed by an online collaboration. It has been a pleasure to write for such dedicated young musicians.
